I am a great fan of Nick Hornby’s work. High Fidelity is one of my all-time top-five favorite novels (see what I did there?). Music is an incredibly powerful thing and is more important now than ever. It can affect us in ways we never thought possible from something so unassuming that it catches us off-guard constantly. My customers only get music when they’ve been good, which is rare. They have enough mood swings already without my help via in-store music.
I’m going to leave this quote here with you:
“What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?”― Nick Hornby, High Fidelity
